Oswaldo Cabrera's Ankle Injury Last Night Was Gruesome And Depressing

Monday's sports night was unfortunately marred with a pair of gruesome injuries. Jayson Tatum's torn achilles was absolutely depressing to witness. Watching him writhe around in the pain on the MSG floor was jarring. It kinda made you forget there was a highly competitive playoff game going on. In the span of minutes not only had the Celtics lost the game and maybe the series, but their franchise player's career might have changed forever on a night he was arguably playing his best ball ever. I'd like to think he can rebound from this, but it's so complex that there's no guarantees sadly.

A few hours later I found myself watching the Yankees west coast tilt against the Mariners. With the game in hand late, Oswaldo Cabrera ran home in the 9th inning on a sac fly from Aaron Judge. While avoiding the tag Oswaldo's foot got caught underneath his body and snapped. If you're squeamish in any way, don't watch the video below.

Waldo knew immediately, yet still had the wherewithal to touch home and score. Gamer. The team's training staff sprinted onto the field and immediately covered his foot and face with a towel.

Like Tatum, you could see how much pain he was in. An ambulance quickly arrived to the field where he was stretchered off and taken to the hospital. Today they confirmed the ankle fracture although I'm not sure if we're out of the woods when it comes to ligament damage on top of this. I mean his foot was going the wrong way for Christ's sake. Horrifying sight all around.

If you're not a fan of the Yankees you probably won't bat an eye at a utility player with a sub .700 OPS going down. Obviously the injury is brutal and you wouldn't wish that on anyone, but why would his loss hurt the team in anyway. Well to those people I'd be quick to tell them Oswaldo is absolutely beloved in that clubhouse. I don't think you can find one person on Earth who would say a bad thing about that human being. He is ALWAYS smiling. You want a vibes guy? It's him.

You want energy? He's always bringing it. And on top of that his flexibility in the field and timely bat in big moments adds a boost to the team. Despite never being a top prospect by any means, Cabrera has fought to be a regular name on this roster for four years now. Speaks to who he is that his first question to Judge was "did I score" as he was lying there receiving treatment from the medical team. Dude's a ball player. His energy, fight, and flexibility have helped this team win games since he was first called up in 2022.

The whole team was visibly shook last night after the game. Judge, Boone, Grisham they all had tears in their eyes. Hopefully it was a clean break and he's able to return next season with no limitations.

P.S. DJ LeMahieu is truly inevitable
