Here's my daily rundown for Wednesday April 30th -
TOPIC #1 - WILL THIS BELICHICK AND GIRLFRIEND DRAMA EVER END? ANOTHER STATEMENT, ALLEGEDLY FROM HIM, WAS RELEASED TODAY
What do you think North Carolina is thinking right now?
They've got to be wondering "what the fuck did we get ourselves into?" at this point.
And I don't care if the Tar Heels are ACC Champs come November, there is no way you can tell me the juice has been worth the squeeze. And we haven't even played meaningful football yet!
For those keeping score at home, if you believe everything we've reportedly been shown and told came from Belichick, this is all far, far more than we EVER heard him publicly comment on things that were of actual significance- Spygate, Deflategate, Malcolm Butler Super Bowl LII Benching, Brady Fallout, Kraft Fallout.
The fact this was posted to UNC's official athletic department website is even more bizarre. And totally out of character from the Belichick we've known for 20 years.
Again I ask, is this a clone? Or is he being forced to do things against his will?
None of this adds up.
TOPIC #2 - FALCONS COACH, RIGHTFULLY, GETS FINED FOR HIS SON BEING A MORON AND PRANKING SHEDEUR SANDERS
Controversial take here, but after living in Chicago the last few years, and seeing the shit kids think is funny and ok to do, can we start doing more of this penalizing and reprimanding the parents? Across the board? If there are going to be zero repercussions for the kids, can we at least discipline the shitheads who raised them? "Sins of the father" yah yah I get it, but this is the other way around.
Now granted, this kid didn't shoot up a school. He played a prank via the phone. Totally different things.
But as somebody who grew up loving Frank Rizzo, and The Jerky Boys, even I know where you draw the line between harmless fun, and cruelty. Especially when it's done on video "for clicks". These kids need to get a life.
(Sidebar - If my kid cost me $100,000, no matter how much I'm pulling in, that kids getting the belt. If I cost my dad $100 when I was growing up, I would have just runaway and never returned. No joke. Would have hopped a train to somewhere and lived on the streets. Kids today.)
TOPIC #3 - THE CELTICS BEAT THE BRAKES OFF THE MAGIC AND TATUM DID THE HEAVY LIFTING
The Celtics looked asleep at the wheel through the first half last night. But they came out of halftime and blew Orlando the fuck out. For some reason the Magic stopped playing aggressive and physical, which allowed Tatum to really take over and go off. I don't understand why more teams aren't like this with him. He's a far better and tougher player physically and mentally than he was a few seasons ago, but he's still not at that level where I can call him elite. He gets rattled too easy and lets guys throw him off his game that throw him around. We will for sure see it in the Knicks series. Thibadeau knows.
But not to be a debbie downer, it's fucking awesome to watch the Celtics play basketball right now. They are firing on all cylinders. Even without Porzingis playing how he needs to.
TOPIC #4 - HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE TEAM HAZING GONE VERY WRONG
Ok this one came from Jordie and I have to be honest. Before reading this blog I planned to take a very different angle on this.
I was going to talk about how back when I was double-majoring for pre-law at Loyola, one of my favorite professors, Professor Lombardo told our class something that stuck with me to this day. Paraphrasing here, but he said something along the lines of that if somebody ever kidnapped somebody, they may as well go ahead and kill them because the penalties aren't that much more severe and you have a much better chance of getting off for murder than you do for kidnapping.
But after reading this story and the details, holy shit man.
What the hell is wrong with these kids?
Extreme isn't even the word to describe pulling a gun on the kid and putting a pillowcase over their head to lead them out to the woods.
Crazy shit.
(Sidebar - I tried to get the Chicago guys (back when the office was in the back of the insurance agency) to sign up for this "Urban Evasion" course I have been wanting to take. It's basically this same scenario, except it's in the city, not the woods. And you pay for it. It's taught by ex special forces guys, over 3 days. 2 days in a classroom learning skills and techniques, and then a test in the field on the last day. One of my good friends did it and told me that it starts off with them pillow sacking your head and zip tying your arms and feet. Then you get thrown in a trunk of a car and driven to a not-so-great neighborhood in Chicago. You have 8 hours to find your way back to "base" without being spotted by one of the instructors. You can use disguises, and any means of transportation you can acquire. You just can't be seen or caught by these guys looking for you. And you have no cell phone or wallet or money on you to start. I still want to do this and make this a video. I got the OK from the guy who runs the course I just can't find anybody to sign up with me for it.)
TOPIC #5 - MIKE VRABEL HAS ME FIRED UP TO BE A PATRIOTS FAN AGAIN
I have said this a million times and people think I'm insane because the message is lost on them.
BILL BELICHICK IS THE GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME, IN SPITE OF HIMSELF BEING ONE OF THE WORST GMS OF ALL TIME.
It is fucking incredible how successful the coach Bill Belichick was considering how behind the eight ball general manager Bill Belichick always put him.
Guy fucking defined the art of making chicken salad out of chicken shit.
Every other team's trash became Belichick's treasure. Not because he was some guru. But because he was cheap as fuck, and knew how to setup guys for success. Obviously that's a tremendous talent, not saying it's not. But imagine if he'd been able to have a GM like Howie Roseman? A guy who knew how, and was able to devote his entire career, and season, to scouting talent, working the phones and networking around the league. Who nailed every fucking draft and who spent money and spent it wisely. Can you imagine how many more Super Bowls Bill and the Pats win if that's the case? He seriously may have never lost a game.
Mayo and company was obviously not it.
It feels so reassuring having a guy who knows what the fuck he's doing, back in charge leading everybody into battle. Thank God New England was able to snatch Vrabel up before somebody else was able to get him.
