Nico Finally Caught A Win: Shams Went On National TV And Reported That Mavs Owner Patrick Dumont Forced Nico Harrison Into Having That Bizarre Press Conference

When we first heard that Nico Harrison was holding a top secret invite-only press conference where all cameras and recording devices were banned, it didn't make much sense. Considering the fact that both he and Jason Kidd had already faced the media (with cameras and recording devices) since the Luka Trade, it didn't make much sense to me as to why now all of a sudden, things needed to be done in private. Whatever was said was going to be put out to the world anyway since ya know, you invited the media, so the whole thing didn't exactly pass the smell test.
Then again, nothing about anything Nico Harrison has done over the last two plus months has passed the smell test, so on some level, it was believable that he could try and pull a move like that. But is that how it really went down? Based on the information we had at the time, all we could do is assume that's what we were seeing.
But now? According to Shams, there may be more behind the story
OK, let's talk this through, because there's a few different ways to take that clip.
It's no secret that the entire sports world is shitting all over Nico Harrison. He's the butt of every joke, his own fanbase wants him sent to the depths of hell, things aren't great. So what might help? A Shams lifeline. Getting it out to the public that, actually, this wasn't Nico's idea. In fact, he was forced into it by their bozo owner. Ladies and gentlemen, that's Damage Control 101. Technically, part of the GM's job is to take the hits for the owner. Every bad decision they make, you take the heat. Well, what better way to help change a narrative than to have Shams go on national TV and make that kind of proclamation? Surely it doesn't change how anyone feels, but it is an interesting wrinkle.
It's not totally out of the realm of possibility that Patrick Dumont forced Nico into doing his presser that way. The guy is probably still not over what happened the last time he himself stepped onto a stage and talked about this trade in front the media, cameras and recording devices
Fast forward a month later and the next time we see anyone from the Mavs talk about everything, it's suddenly a top secret meeting? That doesn't exactly feel like a coincidence. It's clear this moron has no idea how to run his basketball team or to make any sort of smart decision in regards to anything, so when you consider the fact that Nico had already faced the music with the media before yesterday, combined with the fact that the owner just had a disaster public appearance a month ago….
I think we have to side with Shams here and give Nico the benefit of the doubt. I think he actually got forced into it by their bozo owner. Not only does the timeline add up, there's also the fact that eventually, the Mavs changed course during the actual presser and allowed recording devices to be used. That's what makes you feel like this was ownership the whole way.
As a Mavs fan, it's not like this makes the situation any better. It's just as brutal to be under the reign of a moron owner who just ruined the franchise as it is to also be under the reigh of a moron GM. In the end, there are no real winners here.
But in the spirit of fairness and after looking at the evidence, I don't think we can pin that bizarre press conference on Nico Harrison.
Hey, where I come from, we call that progress.
