Good Trip: American College Kid Gets On Wrong Party Boat, Ends Up Part Of An English Soccer Team's Road Trip, Adopted By The Fans
[Source] - Speaking to the Southend Echo, Johnston said he “had some suspicions” he was not on the correct boat.
“They seemed to know each other and were making chants I didn’t understand,” he said. “But I decided to board anyways because I figured if they checked tickets they would just turn me around and there would be no harm done.”
Johnston said he slipped on the boat “undetected” after no ticket inspections took place, and soon forgot his sightseeing plans as he joined 1,458 Southend supporters for their trip to Gander Green Lane, Sutton’s 5,013-capacity stadium.
So this is just a mix of Green Street and EuroTrip, right? The American getting adopted by an English soccer team is Green Street. You get on the wrong bus and end up traveling with a bunch of fans/hooligans is EuroTrip. I don't hate the move, especially considering it's a 5th tier team, just how do you get in this scenario? I promise I'll never get on the wrong boat. I don't care where I am, I pride myself in knowing what boat or car or whatever mode of transportation to get on.
That said, you gotta lean all the way in the moment this happens. You can't be scared. You can't sit there and act shy. You gotta embrace being a Southend supporter. Hell, they got a great name with the Shrimpers. You become the lead Shrimper. You party with all these guys, you learn the chants, you get in the mix as much as possible. It's the only play you have here. Not to mention going on this party boat is a million times better than some sightseeing boat. Come on, you can go see the sites whenever you want, you rarely end up on a soccer supporter party boat going to an away match.
This only works in the minor leagues like this too. You can't do this with one of the big Premier League clubs. You have to go to this sort of league, teams fighting to get promoted to the top-4 leagues in English soccer. Get in on the club early, if they get promoted act like you're the turning point. Complete sidenote, this American dude couldn't look more out of place. Could have moved him away from the center of the photo and he'd still be the easiest one to point out. Way to lean into it though.
