The NHL Social Team Saw The Numbies And Wasted No Time Drumming Up The "Ovi To 1,000 Goals" Storyline

My goodness, NHL, his hangover from Friday hadn't even set in yet, nevermind his hangover from Sunday, and they already started up the publicity machine for a new Ovi chase. You would hope they would let the man take a breath for 2 seconds before starting up a new storyline for him, but nope, they definitely saw the Gr8Chase numbers and had that graphic made ASAP.

Simply put- Ovi puts asses in seats. His chase to 895 was nothing besides legendary- doing it in a season where he broke his leg and still going over 40 goals at 39 years old, all the while the Caps are the best team in the East. It's been a picture perfect season so far, but there ain't no rest for the wicked I suppose.

What's funny is they are completely skipping over that little "900 career goals" thing. Like ummmm....are we just ignoring he is going to be the first player to ever hit the 900 mark? That seems sort of important. Seems like something we should keep in mind when making funny little graphics for him. Sure, 1,000 would be unbelievable. And it's also attainable, should he choose to. But let's not gloss over 900, fellas. Being the first to 900 is an accomplishment on its own, because honestly, even if Gretzky played an entire season more, there is no guarantee he would have scored the 6 more needed to hit the mark. But for Ovi, at 39 years old and 20 NHL seasons, it's a 99% (no numeric pun intended) certainty.

So let's all relax right now. We don't know what his future plans are. He has one more year on his contract, and then it's anyone's guess what the future holds. I doubt he knows if he wants to play a couple more years or not. If the Caps were bad I would guess he would hang them up after next season, but if the Caps are competing for a Cup again, I think he might stick around for another go at it...unless we win it this year or next year, which in case he could happily ride into the sunset without a worry. I would say it's 50/50 if he plays after next season, but if he still loves it and is getting goals at any sort of sick pace like this season (42 in 61 games are you kidding me???) I think he stays for one more.
