The Videos From Yesterday's Earthquake in Myanmar are Terrifying
AP News - BANGKOK (AP) — A unilateral partial ceasefire to facilitate earthquake relief efforts was announced on Saturday by Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government, which coordinates the popular struggle against the ruling military. The country’s death toll from the disaster soared to 1,644.
The figure was a sharp rise compared to the 1,002 announced just hours earlier, highlighting the difficulty of confirming casualties over a widespread region and the likelihood that the numbers will continue to grow from Friday’s 7.7 magnitude quake. The number of injured increased to 3,408, while the missing figure rose to 139.
In neighboring Thailand, the death toll increased to 10. The quake rocked the greater Bangkok area, home to around 17 million people, and other parts of the country. Many places in the north reported damage, but the only casualties were reported in Bangkok, the capital.
Nine of the fatalities were at the site of the collapsed high-rise under construction near Bangkok’s Chatuchak market, while 78 people were still unaccounted for.
First off, genuine prayers and positive energy to all these poor people who were affected by this today in Burma/Thailand/Myanmar.
You most likely know it as Myanmar, but it will always be Burma to me.
A 7.7 earthquake is flat-out terrifying. No matter where you are. Factor in an urban environment, with skyscrapers scattered around among the million-plus people that inhabit the capital city of Naypyidaw and it's even scarier.
For context, the quake was so powerful it sent shockwaves across western Europe.
There's really nothing to say, other than praying the devastation doesn't get worse and the people of Myanmar are able to recover and rebuild quickly. So, I'll let the videos do the talking.
These pool videos honestly didn't look all that crazy in terms of how much water spilled from above until seeing this video from street level. Holy shit man.
This. This right here is my nightmare.
Actually nevermind. I lied. It's actually this. Imagine being a window cleaner, cleaning windows on this building when this hit?
This is so sad. Pray for the people of Myanmar.
