'I'm Gonna Worry About The Guys I Got In This Program' - Tom Izzo Delivered A Perfect Rant About The Asinine Decision To Have The Transfer Portal Open Right Now

I find some of Tom Izzo's rants outdated to say the least. This is not one of them. This is in fact the most correct he's ever been. For some unknown reason the geniuses decided to open the transfer portal yesterday. You know, the day after the first weekend of the Tournament when we have 16 teams still playing in the greatest event in the world. 16 coaching staffs worrying about a game plan, travel, getting their guys ready for a moment that can change lives. I'm not even exaggerating with that, a Final Four run can change lives for the players, coaching staffs, people around the program. You get into monetary bonuses, draft stock rising, whatever it might be.

It's pretty fucking easy to say the transfer portal is open after the title game. Seems simple even! Let everyone get done with their season, players can have meetings with coaches, evaluate everything and then open it. If you're going to run college basketball with this free agency, at least have some common sense with it. I said it earlier, but there are two simple fixes. The one I said above with the date to open it, the second being you get one free transfer and then you can transfer without sitting out again if your coach leaves. It's a simple, easy compromise for everyone involved.

You have coaches planning for one of the biggest games of their lives. You can't have them worried about who is coming in next year. You can't be asking them questions. I say this as a fan of a team in the Sweet 16, the last thing I care about is next year. Time to worry about that is when your season is done. I'm worried about the gameplan for Tennessee. So good on Izzo. He's 100% right that he should only worry about the guys in his program today. It's not going to hurt him nor should winning ever hurt anyone.
