Ruthless: Minnesota's AD Left The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee To Fly Back To Campus So He Could Fire Its Coach At 2am

[Source] - Minnesota fired coach Ben Johnson early Thursday morning, in an announcement posted to social media at 2:19 a.m. ET, following the team's season-ending loss Wednesday in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to Northwestern.

The way Johnson was canned was atypical in this regard: Coyle is on the men's basketball selection committee, which began its process to build the NCAA Tournament field in Indiana yesterday. Coyle flew back in secrecy to Minneapolis late Wednesday to fire Johnson.

Brutal and I'm not even sure for who more to be honest. Yeah, Ben Johnson got fired and losing your job as a head coach sucks, but the AD was sitting around watching ball. He was hanging out with his pals, had to catch a flight to go fire someone, have to fly back to the Indy area and may have missed out on some games. No one wants to miss out on some games in March, even if the committee doesn't do the smartest things.

I get it. Minnesota is bad, it's also the worst job in the Big 10. The resources suck, there's no history, whatever. But, it's hilarious seeing an AD get on a plane to fire a guy. Just drive to Indy. We've seen guys get fired on planes and all that. You can make the quick drive and tell Ben Johnson like hey, you're fired, you can catch the team plane back without having to travel back and forth. Nothing worse than missing games.

What do you even do when you get fired at 2am? Not like you can update your resume and get going on with the next part of your life. But again, why are you flying back in secrecy? You were in the same city! Just fire the man there.
