Joey Bosa, The Last San Diego Charger, Has Been Cut
I will always have a special place in my heart for Joey Bosa. He was an absolute beast in his early career and, other than having a great QB, there's nothing quite like having an edge rusher on the team that can pop off at any moment. In addition to his skill as a player, he's also the last remnant of the Chargers of old. He was drafted onto a team that had Rivers, Gates and Keenan, which is a whole generation. He was also the last San Diego Charger left on the team (not counting Denzel Perryman, who has been on 3 other teams) which is also meaningful as far as a torch being passed. So, obviously, it's kind of sad.
On the other hand, it's also extremely practical. In 2020, Tom Telesco made Bosa the highest paid defensive player in the NFL with a monster 5-year, $135 million dollar deal. Since then, he has only played 42 total games and tallied 27 sacks. The best ability is availability and all that. So, the Chargers save about $30 on the cap and have some cash to spend on depth pieces. Maybe even an NFL caliber interior lineman! Or maybe even DK Metcalf (I'm not allowing myself to hope for that just yet).
Anyway, Joey is only 29 and I've seen firsthand that a pass rusher with some injury history can still have a lot of juice in the tank (Khalil Mack). So I hope he finds the right landing spot and can shake the injury bug. In other words, good luck in San Fransisco, Joey. I'll always respect you for being a football player first but also a hardcore gamer.
