Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's Oscar's Opening Performance Was The Most Beautiful Medley I've Ever Seen Or Heard
I don't care if you aren't into The Wizard Of Oz, The Wiz OR Wicked - these two women are some of the most talented people in the world, their chemistry is absolutely unmatched, and this homage to all things Oz was unbelievable. There had been rumors on and off about whether or not these two would do a musical number, as Wicked was up for 10 Oscars (winning 2!). When the Academy announced they wouldn't be performing the "Original Song" nominees this year, I was worried we'd be skipping the glitz and glamour all together. Wicked doesn't technically have "original" songs, but, how could we be robbed of these angelic voices? Thank Oz, we were not.
The performance opens up with Ariana behind a light smoke screen, rainbows falling down on her with clouds slowly dissipating as she sang one of the most ethereal versions of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" I've ever heard. The "fog" lifts, and she appears to us in head to toe Schiaparelli shimmering red, as if she herself was Dorothy's ruby slipper. Hit all the right notes, gave the crowd goosebumps, then floated to stage left and makes way for Cynthia to appear. Cynthia wore a big billowing white gown (dare we say wedding dress?) covered in 3D cascading flowers to perform "Home" from The Wiz. Watching her sing is mesmerizing not only because you can't understand where in her tiny body that HUGE voice comes from, but also the fact it looks completely effortless. It seems like she's having a casual conversation hitting high notes that dogs can hear from 3 states away.
Finally, Ariana joins Cynthia on stage as they begin to sing Defying Gravity. I can't figure out if they've sang this together live before, but holy shit - there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I was sobbing on my couch, Michelle Yeoh was sobbing in the audience - it blew the fucking ROOF off the place. Whether you like Wicked or not, the performance is worth the watch. When Cynthia looks right in the camera for her NOBODY, IN ALL OF OZ.....chills for life. 20/20 performance.
Bring them back every year!!!
