I still can't believe all these years later that Skype was such a big product that it was a verb for videoconferencing people, yet when the world became a place that relied on videoconferencing due to a pandemic shutting meeting in public down, Skype got its throne taken by Zoom, which I feel like nobody knew about until it became the lifeline for social interaction. Imagine if people just stopped using Kleenex while Covid was infecting the entire planet? That's essentially exactly what happened with Skype.

Now five years later, Skype is gone and Zooming (or Facetiming) is the verb you use when you have to call someone on video. Truly remarkable stuff from Skype and the people at Microsoft, who paid $8.5 BILLION for Skype back in 2011 only to watch it get dusted by some newcomer less than a decade later when the entire world needed a program exactly like it. Dennis Schröder and Sofia With An F take a ton of shit for dropping the bag but both look like shrewd businesspeople compared to the suits at Skype.
