'Fucking Devastated For Our Fucking Guys' - Rutgers Head Coach Steve Pikiell Is A Broken Man After Losing At The Buzzer, Season Being A Disaster
In case you missed it last night, another buzzer beater. This time it was Nimari Burnett sending the dagger to Rutgers. It keeps Michigan alive for a Big 10 race, but that's not what I took away from this. Steve Pikiell, Rutgers head coach, who dropped this after the game:
That's a broken man. I don't blame him, this was the season that Rutgers went all-in. They went out and got Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper. They banked on two top-5 NBA picks to push this program to a different level. Let me be clear, Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper have lived up to the hype. They are awesome. However, Rutgers missed on who to bring around them. They were basically forced to bring guys in who aren't ready to compete in the Big 10 because of lack of resources (NIL) and various other reasons.
It's also important to note Pikiell is a defensive coach. The man lives to kill you on defense. This team is awful on defense. They have to try to outscore everyone and they can't. That's where this frustration comes in. He knows this season has been a disaster compared to hype. Rutgers still needs a win to lock up a spot for the Big 10 Tournament and then needs to win that just to get into the NCAA Tournament. This man is broken. I appreciate the honest response, but, yeah, you can feel the frustration there.
