"The Call Is Surprisingly Correct" - Umpire Mike Muchlinski Makes Fun Of Himself After His Call Was Upheld By The ABS Challenge System
Finally, an umpire who can laugh at himself and DOESN'T take himself too seriously! ABS has taken over Spring Training and I love it, it helps get the calls right in an incredibly timely manner and keeps the game moving. We've seen some interesting calls and challenges so far but this is by far the funniest one.
I enjoy the ABS system because it seems like it will hold these guys accountable. These umpires will have to turn around to a packed ballpark and openly say "I got it wrong, it's a strike" instead of just keeping their strike zone without any repercussions outside of some boos like Cowboy Joe West or Angel Hernandez over the years. Same with catchers and pitchers who call for the challenges and get it wrong in front of everyone. Muchlinski dealt with it in a funny manner which actually made umpires likable for the first time...ever? I'm sure we won't see something like this in a big game next year when it eventually comes to the majors but you can get away with this in spring.
