The Beautiful Game: International Soccer Has a New Broadcasting Superstar in Miroslava Montemayor

Tuesday night's futbol coverage on TNT Sports Mexico introduced much of the world to Miroslava Montemayor, hosting its "Mediotiempo" or "Halftime" (Thanks, one semester of middle school Spanish!) segment:

Let's agree to leave all the lazy, perfunctory, "I hate soccer because it's boring and nobody scores" attempts at cheap comedy to the Rick Reilly columns on the back page of the 1990s Sports Illustrateds you subscribed to just so you could get the free football phone, shall we? This isn't about anyone's preference for which sport they like or don't like. This transcends personal tastes. This is about one thing and one thing only.

A star is born.

I apologize to Ms. Montemayor if she's been in the public eye for a while and I'm only just discovering her thanks to this X post (with 77K likes) and this video, which are both less than 24 hours old. Like any narcissist, I'm operating off the philosophy that a thing is new if it's new to me.

But whether this was her broadcasting debut or she's been out there, plying her trade, covering minor league games in small towns, honing her skills, climbing that ladder and finally making it to the big time, she most definitely has made it. This is how you announce your presence with authority and put the world on notice there's a new giant on the broadcast scene. Miroslava Montemayor doth bestride the narrow world like a colossus.

So with all due respect to our greatest, most legendary sportscasters, let this be a warning to you. Keep your head on a swivel. Those footsteps you're hearing belong to this up and comer. Al Michaels. Jim Nantz. Joe Buck. Michelle Tayfoya. Kevin Burkhardt. Mike Tirico. Stephen A. Smith. Erin Andrews. Charles Barkley. Ernie Johnson. Tom Brady. Strike that; Tom Brady is safe. But anyone who works in front of a camera right now needs to be aware that Miroslava is coming for their jobs. Whether it's futbol or football. Basketball, baseball, hockey, MMA or golf. March Madness this year or the Winter Olympics next year. She can do it all. With or without fluent English. Her excellence transcends things like knowledge of the sport she's covering or language barriers.

All hail our new Queen. Long may she reign.

Maybe she can give color commentary for the next Rough 'N Rowdy? Either way, Viva Montemayor.
