Throwback Thursday - Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You?
I'll tell you what. Since putting my DJ career on hold to focus on our hospitality company and banging out blogs, I gotta be honest and admit that I miss the rush that came with following up a truly great song, with a truly greater song. There's no feeling like making a crowd react a certain way. It's a drug they've yet to discover a way to put in pill, or bottle, or powder form yet.
I say all that because I was blown away by the response of last week's "Throwback Thursday" blog. The song I chose to go with was "Tempted" by Squeeze, after I heard it earlier in the week at a Walgreen's.
The comments blew up. My DMs blew up. I ran into people in Detroit and Chicago who said "hey fuck face, great blog on Squeeze! I love that song".
My second favorite sportswriter, for my favorite football team reached out to me to tell me how much he loved seeing Squeeze on Barstool and how sentimental the band was to him.
Suffice to say, I couldn't believe the reaction.
That's tough to top I have to say. And just being transparent, now I'm a little gun shy on how to follow that up.
So I'm going to go with one of my mom's favorite songs, that I must have heard her play 5,000 times in my life growing up.
"Would I Lie To You?" By Charles and Eddie.
This track is a classic early ‘90s R&B-pop gem that shot to fame by hitting the top of the UK charts and also climbing into the Top 20 in the U.S. Written by Mick Leeson and Peter Vale, the track earned the prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 1993 for its stellar songwriting.
Its smooth, soulful harmonies and catchy hook quickly made it a radio staple, showcasing Charles Pettigrew and Eddie Chacon’s knack for blending jazz, soul, and pop influences. Even though they only released a couple of albums, this upbeat tune became the defining highlight of their career. (It sucked to learn that Eddie sadly passed away in 2001 at only the age of 37.)
I'm on a mission to get these going again on Thursdays and build our Backstage spotify account come hell or high water.
Throw some suggestions in the comments and keep on rockin in the free world. I'm going to take the awesome suggestions from last week's blog, combine them with the ones in this one, and put together a "comment section" playlist" I'll post next week. And maybe continue to add to.
p.s. - if you love alternative rock, classic rock, and indie, here's a mix I made a few years ago that cracks.
