Troy Aikman Goes In On The Cowboys Organization, Says He No Longer Believes Dallas Is A Coveted Head Coaching Position
“I thought Mike McCarthy would be the head coach, so this is a bit of a surprise for me today that he’s not going to be … It suggests that there's not a real plan,” Aikman said from State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
“I love the Dallas Cowboys. I played there for 12 years, I wish them well,” he added.
“To say that it’s a coveted job, I’m not sure I would necessarily agree with that.”
First off, Troy Aikman rocks. I love when he just starts going in, he is one of the best in the business when he actually cares about something, he won't mince words. He will openly say if a player/coach/organization is up to no good, and he always says it in his very disgusted, not even trying to sugarcoat his true feelings way.
So for Troy, someone you would consider a face of the Cowboys organization, to shred the team and Jerry like that, is very, very telling how EVERYONE connected to Dallas feels. Actually, I retract something I just wrote above...this is him sugarcoating it. I am positive he wants to go in a lot harder (pause) on Jerry Jones, but he doesn't want to stop getting the alumni benefits and speaking engagements and golf course access. So he went in 75%, which I think is more than fair.
And obviously, he's 100% correct. The Cowboys are a ginormous brand. It's the Dallas Cowboys, for heaven's sake! But Jerry has fundamentally ruined them. Nobody looks at the Cowboys as a "must-coach" team anymore because their GM is a 98 year old diaper wearing idiot. Jerry doesn't let coaches pick players or have any organizational control. It wouldn't shock me if Jerry occasionally calls a play or two from the owner's box, seriously. As far as head coaching jobs go, Dallas is not a prime spot. You have no say in anything and get scape goated when the team fails.
If Aikman is any indication, everyone Cowboys-adjacent is sick of Jerry. But until he dies, nothing will change. Let us just hope he picks the right guy for the job....
