Just Win: Amon-Ra St. Brown Thinks The NFL Should Change Its Playoff Rules So A 14-Win Team Doesn't Have To Play A Road Game
Feel like this debate comes up every few years because of how the NFL operates. There's always at least one shitty division (looking at you, AFC South typically) where a team gets in with 8 wins and hosts a first round game. That's what we're looking at right now in the NFC when you have the loser of the Vikings/Lions game on Sunday becoming the 5th seed. It makes no sense for a 14-win team to be the 5th seed but it's just how we always worked in the NFL. They'll go on the road at least twice and need upsets to host the NFC title game.
So it begs the question - do you do what St. Brown wants? Division winners get in the playoffs, but you just seed based on wins. Me? I don't care. It's not like teams play balanced schedules where you can say that. You win the division, you get the home game. Also how many times are we going to see a division where the winner has 15 wins and 2nd place has 14? That ain't happening a lot. It's similar to the debate we're seeing in college football right now. That one makes more sense to me because that seeding process makes no sense.
Dan Campbell says it right though. The Lions have been playing playoff games:
Playing for a bye and homefield advantage matters. It's not like they could afford to lose and just accept being the 5 seed. Naturally Vikings fans are calling St. Brown a whiny bitch and loser talk for something like this, which, good! We have a week 18 game that matters. That's what you want when you have these division games late.
