The Referee for Tennessee-Ohio State Has Authored Some of the Worst Calls in College Football History, Including One That Already Stole a Win From Tennessee

I have to give the College Football Playoff a round of applause for putting its crack team on the whistle for the marquee game of the first round. You didn't think the powers that be were going to make it easy to hand Ohio State a second straight home loss, did you?

It seems ACC referee Jerry Magallanes will be on the call for Tennessee-OSU on Saturday night, which didn't mean anything to me at first because I don't follow ACC officiating too closely. But then I took a look at this asshole's résumé.

First up, we have the ultimate screwjob of Tennessee in overtime of the 2021 Music City Bowl. Jaylen Wright scored one of the most obvious touchdowns you're ever going to see, there was no whistle for his forward progress being stopped before he crossed the goal line — which would have been wrong, anyway — and Magallanes & Co. still said it didn't count just because they felt like it. The kicker with this one was the crew pretended to review the call, despite the fact it wasn't even reviewable because they said they blew Wright's forward progress dead. Magallanes should still be in prison for what he pulled that night.

That alone would be enough for this CFP assignment to be a crock of shit. But wait, there's more!

The most infamous call of Magallanes's career came in 2015 when Miami scored on an eight-lateral kick return as time expired to beat Duke . The only problem was that one of the players was down well before he let go of the ball and there was a clear block in the back that wasn't called. Magallanes and the rest of the officiating crew were suspended by the ACC following that incident.

And then, just this season, Magallanes was back for the botched Hail Mary in Miami-Virginia Tech. Someone seemingly caught the ball lobbed up by Kyron Drones on the final play of the game, but even the officials didn't seem to know who had it in the back of the end zone. So they just stood there for about 30 seconds and decided it was a touchdown despite a Miami player running out of the pile with the ball and then overturned that call after a 5-minute review with no indisputable video evidence to do that.

Suffice it to say Magallanes is an all-time dipshit. I don't necessarily think he has it out for Tennessee in particular, but I do believe his incompetence is being weaponized to help the home team in his CFP assignment. Someone of his mental stature is not going to be making calls against the brand that is Ohio State in The Horseshoe.

So we'll just have to beat Magallanes too, I guess. He's had it coming for three years and I'm glad we get to take him down along with Ryan Day in one fell swoop.
