Breaking Down Everyone At Barstool Sports Spotify Wrapped
It's that time of year again- Spotify Wrapped! There are few pure things in this world anymore, but Wrapped is one of the few. I love looking at other people's most listened to music of the year. I am always curious- are more people like me and listen to the same music year in and year out, listen to mostly the same bands, and struggle to find new music or artists/bands they like? Or do people continually evolve, and 2023 vs 2024 Wrapped are completely different?
So I sent an email to Barstool Sports asking everyone to send me their Wrapped screenshots so we could take a look and maybe make some witty banter about what music everyone listens to. Not everyone replied, but we got like 20, which is nice. And so maybe we can play a game on a few of them- see if you can guess what Barstool employee likes what music. Let's start with the first reply I got. I was sorta shocked by his top 5 artists. Here's a hint: I thought I'd see the Foo Fighters in there.
The Beatles number 1! Here's another hint- it's NOT Robbie Fox. Stunning, right?
Alright make your guess……..because the answer issssssss
Franie Borrelli! I think the biggest shocker is Eagles at number 5. I like the Eagles…I think? I mean I know the 3 songs that get played all the time, but I can't say I've ever dove deep into their catalogue. And Noah Kahan at 2, beautiful. I missed the entire Noah Kahan wave, and then have done nothing but listen to Live From Fenway for the last 2 months. Can't believe I missed him on tour, kinda beating myself up over it now.
Next up…..
Henry "Handsome Hank" Lockwood is the biggest Billy Strings fan out there. But Hank becoming an big Oasis fan is the real story here. I think he said he watched the documentary on Netflix and just started listening to them and realized what a few of us have known for a while- Oasis BANGS. They have such a deep, deep catalogue that far surpasses Wonderwall, I get excited any time I hear a new person discover what Oasis really is and get hooked on them.
If you follow any girl on Spotify you've seen the above list of the same 5 artists in every iteration. Not for nothing, a huge year for the girls. Give it up for women!!!! Taylor, Chappell, Sabrina, Ariana, and Gracie ran the damn ball up the middle for 7 yards a carry all year. And Olivia too, gotta give my girl Olivia credit as well. What's shocking about the above though is the number 1 song is a Chappell song…..from Kelly Keegs!!!!! Upset of the century, folks! But that truly is how good Red Wine Supernova is, you can hit "repeat" on that 15 times in a row before moving on.
This is some cool guy shit I know nothing about. I looked at this list like
I've heard the names Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, and Young Thug, but when you see them listed together like that with songs like "Poppin' Them Thangs" and "Type Shit" on the other side, it starts to read a bit like I'm 36 and absolutely washed. I know if I needed a cool guy playlist, Rudy is my one stop shop.
Out first Apple Music submission! From everything I hear, Apple Music is superior to Spotify in terms of music quality. Apparently they get the music fresh off the vine, meanwhile Spotify has some additives that waters it down a little. I'll never leave Spotify because I'm too used to it, but I hear the folks over at Apple Music are doing a spot up job. As for the top 5 above, can anyone take a guess? I'll give some hints- Young, works in the Chicago office, and I'm super intimidated by. It's Annika, aka King Krabby Patty. 1,500 minutes of Drake I'm assuming is the same as me having Dashboard Confessional in my top 5.
There's the girls again, but this time with Charli xcx instead of Chappel on Gia's Wrapped. I gotta be honest- I did not like Charli xcx's album at all. The "Brat" branding, A+. They knocked that shit out of the park. The album itself I could not get into. I kept checking to make sure I was listening to the right thing, like "THIS is the album people are going bananas over???". I guess it just isn't for me.
I know what you're thinking- Nate is that yours? You love Omah Lay, Victony, NSG, and the lads. But alas, this isn't mine. In case you are uncultured swine, you would know Omah Lay, Victony, and CKay are Nigerian. I'm more of a Popcaan guy myself, shout out Jamaica. This of course belongs to Prince Zah of Zimbabwe.
Now a message from the person behind our next Wrapped:
MY 3 YEAR OLD RUNS MY LIFE AND THIS REFLECTS THAT. I HAVE GOT TO BE THE ONLY HUMAN IN THE WORLD WITH SCATMAN AS MY NUMBER 1 SONG.
Just an incredible spectrum of songs and artists on here. I saw a lot of my friends with babies share similar Wrapped- turns out when you're driving around with toddlers every day and find one song that they will listen to, you end up playing that one song for 6 straight months until your head explodes. That's how you get both Modest Moust and the Batman Theme on your same Wrapped.
This one kinda shocked me…
This is from the one and only Dante the Don. I gotta be honest, I did not foresee Cold War Kids at the top of his list. The aren't emo or sad or yelling about conspiracy theories enough for me to have picked them as the Don's favorite band. J. Cole at the top of the song chart makes much more sense. And once again, shout out to Noah Kahan.
I'm not even going to let you guess this next one because it simply does not make sense at first which is why once I tell you who it is you'll just nod your head and be like ohhhhhh yeah, I guess that does make perfect sense….
The king of the Jersey Shore himself, Jeff D Lowe. I imagine when JDL is at the shore all Summer that Tyla/Tiesto/Metro Boomin playlist is on repeat from 8am to 2am all day every day. His number 1 artist was still Bruce, but I've heard "Miggy Dela Rosa" was a close 2nd.
Another Noah Kahan, this one from Chuck:
And finally, what I was waiting for…someone with white noise as their most played. I'm surprised more people don't have this. I can't sleep without white noise, but I use a fan, which I assume most others do too? But if I didn't like the fan noise, my top 5 would for sure be all white noise like this:
And of course John Mayer at the top of ol' Vibbsy.
As for your's truly? It's about as on brand as you can get for me….
Here's something fun- I never listened to really any Dashboard outside the huge hits until this year. I found their MTV Unplugged and got obsessed with it for a few months, which put them at #2 and 4/5 songs on my top 5 are all from the MTV Unplugged album. (The other song is Seventy times 7). But for my top 5 artists, it's sorta perfect. Blink, Oasis, and OAR are my 3 favorite bands, and TBS is the perfect gym music for me.
Happy Wrapped everyone, and I'll leave you with the Out of Order sketch about it. Blessings to all.
