If You Think 'Last Christmas' Is the GOAT Christmas Song, Your Brain Does Not Function Properly

Those two tweets have a combined 63,000 retweets and 594,000 likes. I obviously knew "Last Christmas" was popular because it has made it through all these years, but I had no idea there was this large of a community that thinks it's the best Christmas song going. This is nonsense and I have no idea how so many people are apparently bought into this propaganda machine.

First of all, "Last Christmas" is not even a Christmas song. It has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, as a matter of fact. It's a breakup song whose events happen to take place during consecutive Decembers. That doesn't mean I don't like it, but if you want to be in the conversation with the all-time Christmas classics, your song has to at least be about Christmas in some appreciable form.

This is just a guess, but I would hypothesize there is a strong correlation between people who believe "Last Christmas" is one of the best Christmas songs in existence and those who begin listening to Christmas music in October. And those are obviously people whose opinions on this matter should be severely discounted.

I think the song is fine. Good, even. But it isn't about Christmas and is therefore disqualifying from even being considered for the best Christmas song ever — not that it would win even if it could.

I am fine with any one of Silent Night, First Noel, O Holy Night, I'll Be Home For Christmas or White Christmas in the top spot.
