Cal Football Gave Their Crime-Busting Equipment Guy the Hero's Treatment He So Richly Deserves
The holiday season is, among other things, at time to be inspired. To be grateful to live in a land where even the most humble among us can achieve greatness. Take for example, this equipment manager of the U. of California Golden Bears. Who, in an instant, went from the relative obscurity of replacing broken chin straps and handing out fresh mouth guards to national fame with one viral - and violent - tackle:
It can't be overstated how bold and courageous his actions were. If you put a million equipment guys on a million sidelines, probably 999,999 of them wouldn't see it as part of their job description to chase down perps. This guy is that one lone wolf. The one who springs into decisive action at the risk of life and limb, goes into hot pursuit, and gets his man like he's a US Marshal hunting down a fugitive.
And I'm proud to inform you that his heroics did not go unnoticed around the program he's so devoted to. In fact, Cal did more than just give him the honor he truly deserves. They turned his crime busting into a pep rally. His viral moment into a pump up video. They gave Trevor Skogerboe his Tribute, like a Roman conqueror returning to the Eternal City with his spoils of war:
If this isn't the embodiment of everything that is good in what the songwriter calls this "land that I love," I don't know what is. Let's face it, the ones who work behind the scenes assisting athletes aren't the most celebrated people in our culture. Think Jason Melon in Back to School, hiding from his dad the fact he's not on the diving team; he's just doing their laundry, like that's something to be ashamed of. Well finally one of these noble, dedicated professionals is getting the recognition they're all due.
Now we probably need to honor the construction workers around the Cal-Berkeley campus. Because I'm guessing after this, they'll be filling in a lot of football player-shaped holes in that locker room wall.
