In One Of The Bigger Shocks In Tennis History, Andy Murray Joins Forces With Novak Djokovic As His New Coach
I'm not sure how many of you will care about this in the midst of a loaded college football Saturday, but late this morning Novak Djokovic stunned the tennis world with news of who his new coach is going to be. It's recently retired Andy Murray…
Giving off true Apollo Creed teaming up with Rocky vibes. Anakin Skywalker becoming a Sith lord. Murray just couldn't live with himself at home away from tennis. Physically he couldn't give the game another inch, but mentally he's all the more ready to keep going. I think a lot of people expected Murray to get into coaching at some point down the road, but more to help out his co-patriot Jack Draper try to improve his game and win his first slam for Great Britain. Nope, instead he joins forces with his long-time rival to light a spark in Novak's career and win another slam. Fucking nuts.
While 2024 brought Novak Djokovic is long elusive Olympic Gold Medal, it was not kind to him when it came to grand slams. He only reached one slam final where Carlos Alcaraz went on to dispatch him at Wimbledon in straight sets. Djokovic didn't win a single tournament outside of the Summer Olympics. Now he hasn't reached an Aaron Rodgers esque nose dive when it comes to an older player greeting father time, but he's also admittedly not a spring chicken either. Things don't come easy to him anymore and one could wonder what kind of fire and motivation he possesses anymore. Why keep going? I suppose passing Margaret Court and winning a 25th career slam to be a all-time slam record holder (man or woman) is the endgame.
Enter Andy Murray. Novak doesn't need tactical changes to his game. He needs Murray's ass firing him up from the coaching box and pushing him to find another level emotionally. Gonna be a wild ride to see those two teaming up. Now we need Rafa and Federer to join Alcaraz's team just for content purposes.
