Michael Kay Is Livid He May Miss Opening Day And He's 100% Right To Be Mad

NY Post- Michael Kay’s ironman streak could be coming to an end.

For 37 straight years, Kay has worked the Yankees’ game on Opening Day, between being a sportswriter (first at The Post in 1987) and then moving on to radio in 1992 to YES Network in 2002.

However, the Yankees will open their 2025 season against the Brewers exclusively on ESPN.

Michael Kay might not be working his first Yankees opening day in 37 years when ESPN has exclusive rights in 2025.

Kay initially saw that ESPN would be airing the games, and said that he would be “red-hot” if this meant the game wouldn’t be available locally on YES Network.

“If it’s exclusive [to ESPN] I’ll weep,” Kay said.

The Yankees’ announcer quickly realized his fears were coming true.

“I’m just told by someone in the know — 100 percent exclusive,” Kay said

I despise the Yankees. DESPISE. I also think Michael Kay is a twerp. He got beat in the ratings forever by Francesa and was always butthurt about it then when they did the documentary on Mike and The Mad Dog he was somehow featured as one of the guests who give comments, which always irked me. He talked shit for years then wanted to be buddy buddy. No thanks. Again, above all he's a Yankees guy and I hate the Yankees. So I hope you know how much it pains me to say this but he's 100 right. 

Baseball is a great game and one I hold near and dear to my heart because of how much my dad loves it also how much the Mets mean to our family. I can talk to my brothers during the tournament or with my sister about The Giants but nothing moves the needle like the Mets. That's the one team everyone is locked in on no questions asked. But truth be told there's a lot less of those families out there then there used to be. The strike in 94 hurt people. the money for players bothers people and frankly baseball hasn't done that great a job to help market itself to the younger generation so people lose interest. However it's still a phenomenal game and one that people love deeply. Part of that love is how much of a routine baseball becomes to people. Every night in front of a tv watching your team. Part of watching it each night is the announcers become second nature, almost as if you watch the game with them. You can pick up on what points they will make throughout a game, laugh at their stories, and overall just love hearing their voice. 

The fact that MLB is trying to take away a home town announcer, especially on opening day is fucking tone deaf. Absolutely moronic and Michael Kay has every right to be pissed about this. Announcers are the fabric of the broadcast and we want to watch the local broadcast for that reason not the national broadcast. To force a national broadcast down our throat and not even give the option for local is assonine and MLB needs to change this asap and until then Michael Kay has every right to be pissed off as do all Yankee fans.
