The Onion Has Acquired Alex Jones' Infowars at Auction

NBC News - The Onion, the satirical news company that repeatedly spoofed conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, has won the bankruptcy auction for control over his media empire — most notably InfoWars, the far-right, conspiracy-minded website that served as Jones' primary online platform.

Jones announced the sale on X Thursday morning.

"I just got word 15 minutes ago that my lawyers and folks met with the U.S. trustee over our bankruptcy this morning and they said they are shutting us down even without a court order this morning," Jones said.

"The Connecticut democrats with The Onion newspaper bought us," he added.

The Onion plans to shutter Jones' InfoWars and rebuild the website featuring well-known internet humor writers and content creators, according to a person with knowledge of the sale.

Details of Wednesday’s auction, including how much was offered for Free Speech Systems, the parent company of Infowars, and related assets, were not immediately known. Funds generated from the sale are meant to satisfy Jones’ estate creditors, comprised largely of victims’ families of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting to whom he must pay damages in defamation verdicts.

That's just solid, well-executed revenge by the Sandy Hook parents right there. Sounds exactly like something Dave Portnoy would do. You have yourself an enemy in Alex Jones. An enemy who you've already beaten into submission by way of $1.5 billion lawsuit that will have him selling everything down to the extra-small shirt off his own back for the remainder of his life. Then when it's finally time for his personal Mona Lisa to go up for auction, the InfoWars media empire, you team up with a fake satirical newspaper to purchase the company and turn it into everything he hates. Well played, parents. Well played, The Onion.

The Onion says they plan to rebuild the website to feature well-known internet humor writers and content creators. They want to turn InfoWars into a parody of itself. But if I'm The Onion, I keep Alex Jones employed. Let him keep doing his show and package the whole thing as satire. You're never going to make funnier content than Alex Jones. You can't be so arrogant to think you can outdo the likes of this.

There's not a comedy writer in the world who can match Alex Jones crazy. And they can force his real-life opinions live on a liberal humor blog.

I supposed based on that video it sounds like Alex Jones would not be on board with that idea. But maybe he needs the money bad enough that he'd do it. Could shave a few more million off that $1.5 billion debt. That's what I would do if I had Alex Jones as an enemy. That's how you really twist the knife. Turn this once well-respected truth teller into someone people don't take seriously.
