NFL Record Breaking Joe Burrow And Ja'Marr Chase Commiseration Stats For Who Dey Nation

I don't know about you, but I'm ready to just say let's have Bengals/Ravens every week on primetime. Just pure football porn watching two of the best quarterbacks running different styles of offense at their zenith. Switch it up from Thursday to Sunday and Monday, but as long as Burrow and Jackson are playing this matchup is always appointment television.

But I'm writing this blog specifically for Bengals fans. To have to watch Burrow play as fantastic as he has vs the Ravens this season and the team still come up short has to be infuriating. While the first loss was due to McPherson missing a 53-yarder in overtime that would have won the game, it's just a fact that the refs blew Thursday's re-match by not calling one of the two obvious penalties on that 2-point attempt:

The Ravens already had a slew of penalties on that drive (not including that other uncalled hands to the face to Burrow) so it really felt like the refs thought they might have actually ran out of flags to throw. I don't really know how else one can explain these not getting called. If only there were some sort of replay-assist to help them out. Oh well.

Anyway, that's the difference between this team being 4-6 and 6-4. And yeah - why not also mention the heartbreaking loss in KC again for a missed field goal. This is a legit 7-3 team that is probably not going to make the Playoffs. There's really nothing left to do other than feel sorry for yourselves. So to help Who Dey out a little bit, here's some misery stats to help you shake your head a little more now that you've had some time to process the loss over morning coffee with whatever particular brand of bleach you prefer.

Joe Burrow is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw nine touchdowns in a regular season vs a division opponent and go 0-2

And just one interception between the two matchups. But after running this lookup, I did find some company for your misery. Daunte Culpepper in 2004 had a 7/0 TD-INT ratio vs the Packers while losing 34-31 in both games. Bobby Thomason was also 7/0 way back in 1955 for the Eagles vs the Redskins while dropping both. Then there's 2018 Russell Wilson (6/0) vs the Rams but that's quite as ridiculous. So pretty much 2004 Culpepper and your dead great grandfather's team are the only real comps here.

Joe Burrow has the second most yards (820) thrown against a division rival when losing both games in a season

Dan Marino is your only guy with more. 874 vs the Jets in 1988. Sad stat for Mr. Dan but definitely not his saddest. But the five interceptions to eight touchdowns can sort of justify why he went 0-2 vs the Jets that year. Honorable mention to Kirk Cousins in 2016 for 813 yards (4/1 ratio) vs the Cowboys in a two-loss effort.

But while Joe has the most yards for any quarterback who lost both games to a division opponent, he also has the most regardless of wins and losses when he threw for 941 back in 2021 vs the Ravens yet again. The Bengals won both of those games at least. For whatever reason, Burrow just absolutely balls again Baltimore. Win or lose.

Alright. That's a couple Burrow stats. Let's talk about Ja'Marr Chase real quick...

Out of over 18,000 player seasons for anyone that had at least one target in each game vs a division opponent, no player had more yards than Ja'Marr Chase did vs the Ravens this season.

Not even close.

Jimmy Smith was #1 on the list before last night which included the 7th most yards for a single game in NFL history ( 291) also vs the Ravens. But Jimmy knows Ja'Marr's plight as the Jaguars also went 0-2 vs the Ravens in that 2000 season. At least Ja'Marr rounds the top-ten on this list with that same 2021 season in which the Bengals won both vs the Ravens.

What is it about the chemistry of these two teams matching up vs one another? It's just insane. And as an outsider with no fan allegiance, I want this on my TV every damn week.
