The SEC and Big Ten Are Reportedly in Discussions To Play a Basketball-Esque 'Challenge' of Non-Conference Football Games

I don't know how many years it's going to be before college football is officially referred to in terms of the Power Two conferences and everyone else, but it won't be very long.

We're already seeing this year how far ahead of the other leagues the SEC and Big Ten are in terms of on-field product as well as media exposure, so it only makes sense that those two conferences would team up for something like this. We see conference "challenges" like this in basketball every season, but imagine how awesome this would be for football. One or two weekends at the beginning of the season with 16 games between every team from the two best conferences in the country. Texas-Ohio State. Alabama-Oregon. Georgia-USC. It would be electric.

Every school is required to play one other power conference opponent a year currently, but half of those games end up being at neutral sites and plenty of teams get away with scheduling Boston College or Wake Forest. Obviously there will be bad teams in the SEC and Big Ten, but having those matchups at the top every year would be incredible. Match the teams up 1-16 with every game on campus and this would be a banger.

I love this idea and it makes a ton of sense for both leagues. We're past the point of no return with the SEC and Big Ten leaving everybody else in the dust, so you may as well go all the way with it now.
