Colin Farrell Is Going To Win An Emmy For 'The Penguin'
We're only three episodes into 'The Penguin' on HBO - the Gotham City mob-focused series set in Matt Reeves' Batman universe - and I'm already pretty confident Colin Farrell is gonna win an Emmy for this role.
I mean, the fact that THIS is Colin Farrell will never not blow my mind, even two years after the release of 'The Batman'....
....but it's not just the makeup/prosthetic transformation Farrell goes through that is shocking. He completely gets lost in the shady, scummy, back-stabbing snake that is Oz Cobb and never for a second do you think about the Irishman playing him.
In the first three episodes, he's gotten to showcase so many different layers this iteration of the character has AND all of the emotions they didn't have the time for in 'The Batman'. We see him confident, scared shitless, laughing, screaming, crying, and even being a good guy who takes kids out for Slush Puppies....
It's not just his performance that's amazing, either - you could make a real argument that Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone is the highlight of the show thus far. She's standing toe-to-toe with Farrell in every scene and could even win an Emmy of her own here if the series maintains quality (and I've heard it does).
Long story short - don't sleep on 'The Penguin' just because it's another comic book property. It's a VERY worthy spinoff to 'The Batman' and it's incredibly deserving of its HBO Sunday night slot.
Oh, and by the way, Marvel's got a series airing weekly on Disney+ right now called 'Agatha All Along' - it's not nearly as good as 'The Penguin' and I definitely wouldn't recommend it to everyone but I'm fulfilling my nerd duties and watching it anyway. I couldn't put Clem through another lackluster Marvel series for the sake of the Basement, though, so we're ending every podcast for the next few weeks with me simply describing the plot of each episode to him. If you're interested in that sorta thing, stick around after the 'Penguin' recaps….
