You Need To Suffer As A Sports Fan

Obviously the start of today’s episode of KFC Radio revolves around the Mets. They’re entrenched in what after two games is looking like an all time series with the Phillies and it’s making for fantastic content in the office. We’re two days removed from game 2 and I still can’t believe Klemmer challenged Bryce Harper like that.

This Mets run is the next chapter in what has been a successful few months for New York sports. The Knicks did their thing in the playoffs, the Mets are making magic on a nightly basis, and the Jets are ever so slightly starting to tickle your balls (Saleh was just fired. Not sure if that makes them tickle more or less). Something is brewing for New York sports, you can feel a change is starting to occur.

Now, New York sports fans might want to rip my head off for saying this…but the suffering is worth it. I think about Boston sports fans that are in my age range of 20-25 years old. The only thing they’ve tasted in their life up to this point is the sweet, sweet nectar of winning and championships. But does that really mean anything to them without feeling defeat? And I’m not talking about a “We lost in the playoffs” defeat, I’m talking a “We sucked so bad it was a miracle when we won a single game” defeat. Until you have to stomach THAT, the wins mean absolutely nothing.

It happened to me with UConn basketball*. Being from Connecticut, they are the pro sports team in the state. Sure, the 2011 and 2014 championships were super cool, but I was so young that it was all I knew. HOWEVAH…once I endured a decade of some of the worst college basketball you could see at the high-major level, the wins were glorious. Shoutout to the Messiah: Dan Hurley.

Giphy Images.

So in a weird, twisted way, if you aren’t suffering as a sports fan then your fandom sort of sucks. You need that heartbreak to experience true euphoria.

*I’m acutely aware that UConn’s “drought” pales in comparison to what New York sports fans have had to endure, but you get the point.

Listen to today’s episode of KFC Radio for the full recap of KFC’s wild couple of days watching the Mets. And he has to do it all over again tonight!
