This Is Real Life: Vanderbilt Beats No. 1 Alabama, 40-35

Vanderbilt entered Saturday's game against No. 1 Alabama 0-60 all-time against AP Top 5 opponents. Alabama went into Nashville fresh off a terrifyingly impressive win over Georgia, looking like the post-Nick Saban era was going to be more of the same for the Crimson Tide.

But then they had to line up against Diego Pavia and the Commodores.

I really don't even know what to say. Vanderbilt beating a top-ranked Alabama team was not on my radar today or any other day for the rest of time. The Commodores have a solid team that's obviously going to be a problem for everybody on their schedule this season, but this is something else. And it wasn't even a fluke; Vandy put 40 points on the board and punked Alabama for 60 minutes.

Give credit to Clark Lea and the Vandy coaching staff, because they had an absolutely perfect gameplan. The Dores had the ball for nearly 40 minutes, converted 12 of 18 third downs and got two timely turnovers without giving one up. If you want to draw up how to win as a four-possession underdog, that's the recipe.

I just can't believe this happened. Short of App State-Michigan, I don't know how many other upsets this century are bigger than this one — certainly among conference games. This was arguably the worst Power Four team in history beating the best.

Alabama lost a football game to Vanderbilt. What a sport.
