THE METS!!!!! Pete Alonso Saves The Season With Game Winning 9th Inning Home Run!!!!!

The Mets season was over. 9th inning. Down 2-0 and the Mets hadn't scored a run in 15 innings. The Brewers had their elite closer Devin Williams on the mound. Mets fans like myself had hope but it was hope without conviction. It was rooting out of desperation. The season was over.

Until it wasn't.

Counting the playoffs, this was the 228th career home run for Pete Alonso and clearly the most important. In fact, many Mets fans don't think he had any remotely important home runs all season. In an impending free agent contract year, Alonso had been awful with runners in scoring position.

Until he changed all of that with a single swing.

This wasn't just the biggest home run for Alonso. This may be the most important home run for the Mets since 1986. The Mike Piazza home run right after 9/11 has it's own special significance but find me a bigger home run for purely baseball reasons for the Mets since they last won a World Series. Daniel Murphy hit a shit ton of dingers in the 2015 playoffs. His homer off Zack Grienke in Game 5 against the Dodgers in the NLDS was gigantic…but that was the 6th inning and that game was tied.

This will be the Pete Alonso Game forever but for a game that will be remembered for a home run, don't forget that it was the pitchers who saved the day for the Mets. Jose Quintana throwing six scoreless innings. Edwin Diaz throwing 39 clutch pitches. David Peterson getting the first major league save of his career.

The pitchers deserve a ton of credit. So do Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo for getting on base before Alonso entered the pantheon of Great Mets. With that ball barely clearing the wall in Milwaukee, Pete Alonso became a future Mets Hall of Famer. This makes re-signing him a much greater possibility. He can't be said he's not clutch again. One swing, one moment can change everything.

I know I'm probably being overly sentimental but getting that moment with these guys was pretty great. Clem, Meek Phill, Rico and Frank love the Mets. Jenks might have even more tied to the Mets as them winning or losing affects his entire working sanity.

I'm sure if you are a Yankees, Astros or Dodgers fan, maybe you are rolling your eyes and snickering a bit as middle-aged men are this happy about getting to a NLDS. I think that's kind of a shit attitude. If you love baseball, you sit though year after year of 162 game seasons for moments just like this. It's about sharing a love for a sport and team with other people who have had the same highs and lows.

The Phillies await the Mets and that's terrifying. That's an excellent team with a very strong rotation and lineup. But the Mets are pretty fucking talented too. They also have one other thing going for them.

They don't know how to quit.

LET'S GO METS!!!!!!! Ya Gotta Believe!
