"We Gonna Play Through Payton. Play Through Sam. We Gonna Still Win The Game" - Jaylen Brown Completely Buried The Detroit Pistons At Media Day By Saying The Quiet Part Out Loud

Of all the moments from today's Media Day, I'm not sure there was a better one than Jaylen Brown completely burying the Detroit Pistons, even if that wasn't his true intention

Now you'll notice he clearly says "no disrespect" so there's no reason for the Pistons or any of their fans to be offended. Sure it's ruthless and maybe a little crazy to say the quiet part out loud, but it's also true. This is exactly what the Celts (and other contending teams) do over the course of an 82 game schedule. The Stay Ready Group of Pritchard/Hauser/Kornet/Tillman etc know their roles, and the fact that they fully embrace those roles is what makes this team so good.

For example, we saw Sam Hauser be unleashed against the lowly Wizards, and he nearly set an NBA record for 3PM before spraining his ankle in which he dropped 30 going 10-13 from deep

With Pritchard, it's the same thing. At the end of the season when the regulars were getting their rest, Pritchard became the #1 option against the Hornets and Wizards, and he dropped 31 and 38 points respectfully to end the season

As we saw in the playoffs, both of those players had big time moments that were crucial to the title run. Brad Stevens says it all the time and he reiterated it again today. They may be "role players", but they are true stars in their roles. That's what sets them apart.

So while Jaylen didn't hold back and the Pistons caught a ricochet shot they probably didn't deserve (they did play the Celts close in a game this season), the basis of what he was saying is rooted in truth. It might sound cocky or conceited, but it's the reality of how Joe Mazzulla & Co approach the regular season. You never know when your number is going to be called in a high pressure moment, so use the regular season matchups against dogshit lottery teams as a way to get those reps in. It's no different than Jaylen getting reps early in the season running the offense and creating for others that looked iffy at times but was MASSIVE once the playoffs rolled around.

I fully expect to not only see this again this season with Pritchard and Hauser, but also other guys like Lonnie Walker IV (should he make the team) and Baylor Scheierman (should he earn minutes). You're only one sprained ankle or something away from a depth piece needing to step up and fill a role/production, and why not get those reps throughout the year while kicking the shit out of bad teams so they can be ready if they need to be called upon once you play better competition.

At the same time, Jaylen did open the door to be trolled to the high heavens should the Celts ever lose a game this year to the Pistons. That's OK though, sometimes the truth hurts.
