The Internet Is Freaking Out About the New Way Schools Are Teaching Math Despite the Fact It's Exactly the Same and Probably Better

If you looked at the quote tweets on this post, you would think teachers were now telling kids that math exists on a spectrum and you can actually get multiple answers to any problem.

The adult and the child in this video are doing the exact same thing. If anything, the kid is showing his work and proving why the answer is what it is. He explains how he arrived at the answer while his mom just rehearses a formula — which he will also eventually be able to do. Nobody with a functioning brain expects this child to be doing simple addition like this when he's an adult. He's in first grade.

I'm all for dunking on unnecessary reinventions of things that have existed for a very long time if they're dumb and pointless, but there's nothing wrong with this at all. It's arguably better for teaching kids how the math actually works than just showing them how to do what the mom did without giving them an understanding of what's happening.
