We Have Officially Found the Worst Targeting Call in College Football History

Get the targeting rule out of college football. It's time.

If you want to have a personal foul for egregious hits to the head, that's fine. But targeting as it's currently constructed is far too ambiguous and encompasses too many hits that result in players being ejected from games. This was a hit on a receiver's ass where the defender was trying to get low to wrap up the ball carrier's legs and he gets tossed from the game because the crown of his helmet apparently goes forward 10 degrees too far while he's making the tackle. We don't have to live like this.

Ejecting players for these calls is what really gets me. This is a sport where guys work 365 days a year for an opportunity to play 12 games. Taking one of those away for a penalty — even if it's correctly applied after a helmet-to-helmet hit — is ridiculous. And I'd say most targeting calls are at least borderline in regards to whether or not they should be penalties at all.

Football is a violent game played by violent men. Everybody out there understands what they've signed up for. There is a place for protecting players from unnecessary collisions, but if this is a targeting penalty that's upheld after review, we need to rethink this rule.
