Play To The Whistle: Dude From Chile Steals The Ball And Scores As Bolivia's Goalie Ruptures His Achilles, Starts A Brouhaha Over 'Fair Play'

[Translation] -  Anti Fair Play? This was Eduardo Vargas' goal vs. Bolivia, with the goalkeeper on the ground.  Carlos Lampe had to leave on a stretcher, due to a medical report that indicated a rupture of the Achilles tendon.

Nothing gets me going like a fair play argument and sportsmanship. Okay, that might be a lie. NCAA Tournament expansion gets me a little more riled up. But this is up there because people are actually arguing that Vargas shouldn't have scored here and should have stopped playing. That's batshit crazy talk. How he's supposed to know that the goalie ruptured his Achilles? I say this as someone who did the same thing, Brandon Walker wasn't going to stop playing a heated 3-on-3 basketball game. We know for sure Nicky Smokes wasn't. Mook was there. You're asking a guy playing in a World Cup qualifier to just hold up the game because the goalie raised his hand like he was injured? That happens at least 10 times a match.

It's bad luck for Bolivia. No other way around it. But the dude tore his Achilles going to kick the ball. You don't pass up a chance to score on an open net, no shot in hell. Now it didn't work, Chile still lost this game so anyone who is pro-fair play can scream karma and all that shit. I also could only use the word brouhaha. It's not a brawl, it's not a fight, it's barely a kerfuffle. Just a scrum of players yelling at each other. Typical soccer fight outside of slapping and an occasional kick. But that's not the point here. The point is what every coach screamed at us since we were like 8 years old. Play until the whistle. Blame the ref if you're mad he got the ball and scored.

Tough luck on the Achilles though, it sucks. It's the worst injury in terms of trying to be comfortable and building it back to strength. I was lucky enough for it to be a partial tear vs a full rupture and it's the worst injury I've ever had by far. You're just stuck in this boot, can barely walk, your calf turns into a tire pump basically after a week. It's just constant discomfort with pain thrown in there. Oh and it takes like 6-8 months to get back to somewhat normalcy. Good times! That said, you should always score against someone as they go down with an injury. Don't cost your team.
