Hot Take: You Shouldn't Be Basing Your Political Opinions On What Celebrities Think, Say or Do
The only reason I am writing this blog right now, is the fact that if I don't, I'm sure some other moron at Barstool will use Taylor Swift's name for clicks where it concerns the latest in this viral online hell - the fact that she hasn't loudly endorsed a political candidate. Yesterday, Taylor and Travis were at the US Open, in the same box as Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany. Friends hanging out with friends!! Shocking!! Brittany Mahomes recently went on a liking spree of Trump support (who fucking cares) which leads us to....absolute insanity coming from "fans" online of Taylor Swift. I'm talking some of the dumbest shit I've ever seen on the internet, and I'm old as fuck. I've seen every minute of the internet since its inception. What's happening now can only be described as brain rot, rage baiting or even possibly sabotage on Taylor Swift's reputation.
I've ignored all of the "fans" on Twitter who are saying things like "i can't believe she hugged Brittany hello," "I'm so disappointed in her for not speaking out against Trump," "she deserves to get dragged by her ponytail for this shit" - real examples of real tweets that I refuse to embed and give attention. I'm convinced they're rage baiting, or teenagers, or just regular trolls. It's all noise. But when I see regular outlets jumping on this click train? Seeing the psycho "stan twitter" discourse and what I previously thought were reputable outlets reporting on it as if it's reality? It's prompted me to say something that I thought was extremely obvious.....
YOU SHOULD NOT BE BASING YOUR POLITICAL THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, OR VOTES ON WHAT CELEBRITIES TELL YOU TO. YES, EVEN TAYLOR SWIFT.
"But Kelly, you love celebrities! Surely you base every decision in your life off of what rich and famous people say!" Wrong. Sooooo wrong. Both sides of the political machine want to influence you. Both sides use people, songs, stories, ALL with the hopes that you'll buy what they're selling. Politics in 2024 have become a full blown reality show and if you can't recognize that, I don't know what to tell you. What I DO know, is that if you're waiting around all day for historically democratic Taylor Swift to say anything about anyone, after a terrorist threat and fans (children) slaughtered in the street a month ago (two separate incidents, by the way) - you're uneducated and ignorant. Do your own research. Go pick up a book. Make a list of things that are important to you in this country, and see which candidate pretends they're going to cover the majority of them. Use your fucking brain for ONCE, and stop coming after entertainers whose one and only job is to: Entertain.
I'm still in the camp where I think half of the discourse online is started by troll accounts who are purposely trying to rile people up, but the alarming rate in which people seemingly have their torches and pitchforks out is abhorrent. If you've ever said you are "disappointed" in a celebrity, for literally anything other than the art they produce (besides, like, murder and assault and shit) - touch grass. Go outside. Meet people in real life. Get a job. Join a group. Find a hobby. Anything that can help you grow back the braincells that allow you to think for yourself.
