Birthdays Get Less Cool and Much More Depressing As You Age

On today’s episode of KFC Radio it was Feits’ 36th birthday, but if you ask me, he doesn’t look a day over 35. I put birthdays in a unique category of events that get considerably less cool, and actually kind of depressing, the more that you age. With this in mind it feels like an appropriate time to run through some of the life events that grow to be less cool as you age.

Going to College Parties

After college you’ve got about a 1-2 year grace period where it still plays for you to be making a little cameo at a college party. However, if you haven’t locked it up after that period you might want to take a look in the mirror and have a real heart to heart with yourself. Let it go, man. Once you have kids of your own and they’re in college, you’re allowed to go Frank The Tank mode at parents weekend. That will never not play.

Injuries

From the ages of about 6-18 there was NOTHING cooler than going down with an injury. Getting to flash those crutches or that cast around town was a spectacular feeling. I broke my arm in a soccer game once (athlete) and would BEG for people to ask about the cast. The point at which your athletic career ends is when the tides turn with this one. You can’t be going into your accounting job on Monday with a torn ACL, you then become the guy who goes way too hard in his over-30 hoops league which is a real tough look.

Birthdays

The genesis of this blog, so it has to be discussed a little bit further. As a kid there was no better feeling than waking up on the day of your birthday. It’s a day all about you, you’re peacocking around school, bringing in cupcakes, the whole nine yards. As you grow older and get more and more cynical this aura around birthdays starts to wear off and birthdays start to be viewed as nothing but one year closer to death. I’d say your last birthday in college is probably the swan song of them being a big celebration. After that every one of your birthdays that’s celebrated on a weekday will likely be in front of an Excel spreadsheet. The epitome of fun.

Be sure to listen to today’s episode of KFC Radio to see all of the birthday festivities!
