Are The Bears In "Win Now" Mode?

Before you jump down my throat about the premise, let's take a look at the evidence.

1) Yes, the Bears have a rookie QB. Typically with a rookie QB you're in year 1 of a rebuild

2) This rebuild started years ago when Poles dismantled what was built by Pace

3) He hasn't been shy about adding veterans. Sweat, Byard, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Swift, Edmunds, and Edwards were all pricy, established, veterans added in the last 12-18 months. He's also paid Moore, Kmet, and Johnson.

4) He was after Judon and ultimately didn't want to part with a 2nd round pick to make it happen.

I don't think you go after a 32 year-old Judon unless you're trying to build a team that can genuinely contend in the next 2-3 seasons. He has his QB and he has him on rookie wages for 4 years. I don't think it is a coincidence that Kmet, Sweat, and the rest of the veterans aren't extended beyond this window where Caleb is on a rookie deal.

Adding Judon, in my opinion, would've established the Bears defense as one that is Super Bowl caliber in 2024. Another impact edge rusher is the only thing really missing at this point on the defense (if you believe in Dexter). The Bears were clearly aggressive because they believe they can and should be trying to win in the short term. I am glad they didn't sacrifice the future by giving up one of their 2nd round picks in 2025 because the interior of the line still needs work, but there's a ton to be excited about and Poles knows it better than anyone. I think it is time to just look at this team for what it is...pretty fucking good on paper. We don't need to guard our collective hearts because we've been burned so many times before. This feels different. It reminds me of the Hawks in 2009 when they signed Hossa, or when the Cubs went out and got Lester. The young core of the team is here and the management is adding the right veterans around them because the time to sit around, wait, and develop is over. It's about winning. It's about winning soon.

If the Bears were in the market for Judon, I bet they are still looking for something opposite of Sweat. Really hope someone bites on that 3rd round pick for a starting caliber Edge. I want the North and the NFC to fear this Bears defense again.
