21 Years Ago The NYC Blackout Robbed Us From What Would Have Been The Best Rucker Game Ever
I'll never forget where I was for the blackout of 2003. I'll start with where I should have been. I should have been coming home from sleep away basketball camp which was a tradition since I was like 8 years old. 6 days, 5 nights, 20 games, endless laughs etc. In high school the entire team went, it was always a blast. Sadly, I couldn't go that year because I failed the Chemistry Regents and stayed home because that's when the test was. Brutal break for my 16 year old self.
Anyway, the blackout cost the basketball community much more than just me going to camp. It cost us one of the most anticipated games ever at The Rucker in the EBC league final. Lebron was rumored to play, Melo, AI and Cousins squaring off against each other in Marbury and Telfair ... NYC legends. The game was also the culmination of a summer of shit talking with Jay Z and Fat Joe. Imagine the scene, imagine the atmosphere, one of the best park games EVER. It's a sin we didn't get it.
I recently watch a documentary on the game, and it was an awesome flash back in time to what kind of buzz this game had and how truly special it would have been. Just an unreal matchup that only could have occurred once and in that type of time before high speed cells and everyone texted etc. The doc is worth a watch.
The full doc is here ...
For what it's worth ... Team Jay Z in a squeaker if the game ever happened.
