The Goalie Goal Continues To Be One Of The Most Electric Plays In Sports As Blaze Riorden Gets His First In The PLL
A fat guy scoring a touchdown in the NFL. A white guy dunking in the NBA. There's just always something special and magical about watching the unexpected. So when a guy's entire job is to keep goals out of the net ends up scoring one himself? It's incredible.
The hockey goalie goal is great because of the suspense as that puck is launched down the ice. You see the goalie set up for the shot, and that whole time you're just holding your breath to see if it goes in the empty net down the other end of the ice. But the lacrosse goalie goal is a little different. Especially when it's Blaze Riorden doing the scoring. He's already scored one of the greatest goalie goals in lacrosse history back in college when he was playing for Albany in the NCAA Tournament.
Blaze Riorden is anything but your ordinary goalie. The man plays out during the winter as a forward in the NLL (indoor lacrosse). So he has crazy stick skills and a nasty shot. The only thing that stops him from filling up the net in the summer is that he isn't exactly known for being the fastest guy in the world. But when you have 4 guys on the Archers ending up below goal line extended after he makes a clean save like that? It's off to the races with a nice little head start on everyone. Takes it right down broadway to the cage and blows one past one of the better goalies on the planet in Brett Dobson. Part of me thinks that Dobson is such a huge lacrosse nerd that he let that shot go in just for the storyline. But offstick bottom corner for the 1st goal of the game? That shot is going on pretty much anybody.
And in most cases, this would have ended up being the best goal of the game. But here comes Kyle Jackson of the Chaos to one-up Riorden with one of the most preposterously silly finishes of the summer.
Ridiculously nasty work right there. Goodness gracious.
