Tom Aspinall KOs Curtis Blaydes In ONE MINUTE To Retain The UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship
HOLY SHIT!! I barely had a second to catch my breath after the Paddy fight and Tom Aspinall went out there and knocked out Curtis Blaydes in one friggin minute! Too easy for Aspinall!
Could the stoppage have been a little early? Maybe; Blaydes was totally with it and protesting the finish when it was called off, but as they pointed out on commentary - it was a baaad visual for Blaydes. He didn't look like a fighter intelligently defending himself when Aspinall was on top of him pouring it on.
Afterwards, Aspinall once again (politely) called out Jon Jones - despite telling us earlier in the week he didn't think that fight would ever happen....
....and the crowd absolutely ate it up. DC tried to get a little more out of him, and Tom continued to be as polite as possible - but reiterated that he thinks he's a better fighter than Jones and wants to put that to the test.
For those unaware, Jones is the current UFC Heavyweight Champ - and he was supposed to defend that title against Stipe Miocic (who hasn't fought since getting knocked out by Francis Ngannou over 3 years ago) last November. All signs pointed towards this being both fighters' final fight, as well.
Instead of that happening, though, Jones tore his pec, putting the fight off for what we believe to be a full year - and just delaying the inevitable: Tom Aspinall getting his interim championship promoted to the real thing once Jones retires.
Jones is the GOAT, so he can do whatever he wants, but it's very frustrating for hardcore fight fans knowing he's likely going to ride off into the sunset before giving the actual best heavyweight in the UFC a crack as his undefeated record. We'll see, though - as DC mentioned, crazier pivots have happened. Congrats to Aspinall and let's go Leon Edwards!
