Roger Goodell Just Laid Out His Ideal NFL Schedule That Includes The Super Bowl Being Played On A 3-Day Weekend
I loathe to say something nice about Roger Goodell, but it is very difficult to find flaws in this format. More football...check. Monday after the Super Bowl is a holiday...check. Less bullshit preseason football where the teams still charge full price for tickets...check. Win-win-win. The NFL just fixed February. They cured seasonal depression.
I am sure the NFLPA will drag their feet on this to get something besides an extra game check for playing another game, as they should, but it's undeniably awesome from the fan's point of view. We basically just need to survive three weeks until March Madness starts in this scenario. More games = more time for Caleb Williams to smash records.
Side note: I wonder if the NFL will expand again sometime soon. The last expansion was over 20 years ago now with the Houston Texans. You'd have to imagine that the expansion fee for a new franchise would be north of $2Bn which would just get split equally among the existing owners. I feel like the NFL could make 36 teams happen if they wanted to. The NFL is such a behemoth. It works in every market. Maybe go Austin, St Louis, Vancouver, and who knows...London? Anecdotal evidence, obviously, but when I was in England a couple weeks ago I was STUNNED by how many people in Nottingham wanted to talk about the NFL with me. Feels like it is growing and growing over there. Figure out a way to make the travel manageable so they're not at a competitive disadvantage and give it a shot.
