Biofuel Company Has Reached Agreement with Wizz Air To Power Their Planes On Human Shit
BBC - The world's first commercial-scale factory turning human waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has been announced.
Biofuel company Firefly plans to develop the plant in Harwich, Essex, and hopes to deliver fuel by 2028.
It has reached an agreement with Wizz Air to provide up to 525,000 tonnes of SAF over 15 years.
Firefly chief executive James Hygate said biosolids were "kind of disgusting stuff" but "an amazing resource".
This is one of those news stories where the joke is so obvious that I don't even really want to blog it. If you asked AI to create a weird quirky news story for a Barstool Sports employee to blog about, that's the headline it would spit out.
"Ha ha ha guys you're not going to believe this. WIZZ AIR is powering their planes with POOP." - that's me writing this. I'm still not entirely sure that BBC News isn't just running some sort of super lame, 12 days too late April Fool's joke. I mean, just look at an actual quote from this article.
"And not just the UK of course. Anywhere in the world where there are people, there's poo," he added.
But it's Friday morning and I'm behind on my blogs this week, so you're getting a shitty wizz air poop fuel blog and you're going to like it (or not I don't really care). Here are two hilarious airplane poop jokes.
- I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable getting on a big pink Wizz Air jet that runs on poop, but hey, it's probably safer than flying on a Boeing, am I right?!
- I can only assume Wizz Air will be hooking up their airplane toilets directly to the gas tank. "Attention passengers, we don't quite have enough fuel to make it to Barcelona, so if anybody went a little too crazy at the airport Chili's before takeoff and wouldn't mind releasing their bowels, then we won't be forced to make a stop for fuel.
I have such a stupid job. But from what I can tell, this is in fact not a joke, and human shit does appear to be a viable source of sustainable aviation fuel.
BBC - Chemists at a lab in Gloucestershire have turned the waste into kerosene.
James Hygate, Firefly Green Fuels CEO, said: "We wanted to find a really low-value feedstock that was highly abundant. And of course poo is abundant."
Independent tests by international aviation regulators found it was nearly identical to standard fossil jet fuel.
You learn something new every day I guess. And I suppose this is a good thing. Sustainable sources of energy are important. Even if it's literal human shit. Maybe some day the whole world will run on shit.
