The Storm Chasers Aren't Dead Yet
Last week, Glenny, Nicky Smokes, Zah, and I hit the road and traveled to four different college basketball games trying to storm the court. It was the second year we've done it since Caleb and Rone retired and asked us to carry on the legacy. Last year, we were able to get a storm in at TCU and keep the tradition alive, but this year we failed.
We followed the protocol of going to four games in the final week of the season, but unfortunately we saw four losses that were never that close. We were unable to bring a storm at a time where America needs court storming the most, as Jay Bilas and the rest of the college basketball media try to shut it down.
We were ready to give up and call it a season and try again next year. Court storming doesn't really happen in conference tourneys and the NCAA Tournament due to the games being played on neutral site locations. But then college basketball power broker Rico Bosco alerted me to one last storming opportunity. Tonight at Colgate. They are hosting Lehigh for the conference title with the winner going dancing.
Now before anyone questions the storm worthiness of the game (Colgate is a higher seed and a favorite), let me hit you with some facts. Colgate stormed in this same exact spot last year when they beat a much worse Lafayette team in the conference finals. A court storm doesn't have to be exclusively reserved for an upset. It can happen anytime the fans in the crowd are so overwhelmed with excitement that they can't stop themselves from rushing onto the court and mobbing the players in celebration. I think that punching your ticket to the tournament absolutely warrants that. No offense to the good people of Colgate, but Colgate isn't exactly Duke. Making the tournament is a huge accomplishment for them worthy of celebration.
Now the unique twist on tonight is that I will be storm chasing on a solo mission. The rest of the chasers are in Chicago or LA so it's just me leading the charge, and Vibbs who was gracious enough to drive me 5 hours up here through Bumblefuck, New York since I don't drive on highways. And look, I know I'm not exactly the highest energy, rah-rah, "let's go" screaming guy in the world, so this will be a challenge. But I'll try my best to lead this charge and maybe I'll just end up having them do Tommy chants if all else fails.
We can't be the chasers that let the storm die. We won't let it happen. Tonight we storm.
