With A Name Like Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, This Kid Was Always Destined To Score The Game Winning Goal Of The Beanpot Final

It was an unseasonably cool Saturday on September 16, 2000. Sitting there in a labor and delivery room at a local hospital in East Greenwich, Rhode Island were Mr and Mrs. Fontaine. They were about to welcome a new baby boy into this world. They knew this was going to be no ordinary boy. They knew that he was destined for greatness. But in order to achieve said greatness, he needed a name that carried as much weight as the legend he would grow to become.

You can't name a kid like that anything basic like Timmy or Johnny. You can't even just dip in to the next tier of names like Tristan or Aidan. You need a name fit to become a hero who is larger than life.

They landed on Gunnarwolfe Fontaine. And last night, he fulfilled his prophecy.

For the 2nd year in a row, and the 5th time in the past 6 years, the Northeastern Huskies are your Beanpot Champions. Up until 2018, they had gone 30 straight years without winning the tournament. But when you bring a kid like Gunnarwolfe into the program, you've got a cheat code on starting up a dynasty.

Hell, he was the main reason why Northeastern won it last year, too. He scored the first goal in the final against Harvard last year.

And he scored later in the game to tie it up at 2-2, which eventually sent the game to overtime.

Unfortunately he couldn't finish the job in overtime himself last year, but Northeastern would go on to win the game in the shootout. When last night's game went to overtime, Gunnarwolfe Fontaine wasn't going to let another opportunity to launch a dagger into the back of the net slip by him again.

What a legend.

If I'm the Nashville Predators right now, I'm doing everything in my power to get this kid signed at the end of the season. They drafted him in the 7th round of the 2020 Draft. I'm pretty sure the rule is you have 4 years to sign college players or else they end up in free agency. I could be wrong and maybe they have one more year to sign the kid. But either way, you can't afford to lose a name like Gunnarwolfe from your organization. Some guys are just meant to be great, and he's one of them. By the way, plenty of stallions have been passed up until the 7th round in the draft before. Henrik Zetterberg, Joe Pavelski, Doug Gilmour. Selfishly I'm rooting for Nashville to screw this up so the Flyers can swoop in. But until then, Gunnarwolfe Forever.

Sidenote: Macklin Celebrini probably won't be playing in a Beanpot final again. But he'll be playing in a few more NHL barns next year, that's for sure.
