Tulsa Coach Kevin Wilson Told a Recruit To Get Rid of His Dogs and Potentially His Girlfriend When Asked About NIL Money

The last act the NCAA ever performs as a functioning organization might be giving Tulsa head coach Kevin Wilson an award, because you're going to have to pry any NIL money you get from his cold, dead hands. He talks about playing for his football team like Dave Ramsey talks to a caller with $80,000 in student loan debt who just bought two new cars and a $600,000 house.

Honestly, Wilson probably has the right approach for being at a place like Tulsa where competing with Power Five programs in the NIL space just isn't going to be possible, but telling a player to get rid of his dogs and girlfriend is crazy. I just hope this particular player realized he was actually getting a pretty sweet deal at $6-7K a month and withdrew from the transfer portal rather than trying to find greener grass somewhere else. Whatever his reasons for transferring, I feel like I'd be able to look past quite a bit for $80,000 a year as a college student — particularly at the G5 level, presumably.

You can see in Wilson's face why college coaches are increasingly leaving for the NFL, though. If you're not at the top level of the sport with huge NIL budgets and a salary competitive with the NFL, why deal with all this stuff you haven't had to for your whole career on top of recruiting year-round when you can go make more money and have actual time off? It's a no-brainer.

I'm going to guess Wilson didn't get this player, but I like the cut of his jib. We need more no-nonsense guys like him.
