I Guess There's Only One Thing Left For Jim Harbaugh To Do....
…with the Chicago Bears.
I woke up today at 6am, like always, because I'm a fucking machine ready to seize the carp at the ass crack of dawn. As my eyes opened and I fished through my sheets for my phone, I thought to myself, "maybe, just maybe I'll open Twitter to news that the Bears are all in on Harbaugh."
Just kidding. I know there's been a few hushed convos in the back alleys of the internet that the Bears haven't made a decision on Eberflus yet because they're going to check in on Harbaugh, but nothing tangible from what I've seen.
I mean why would there be anything tangible? The Bears are a loser organization and haven't ever even sniffed going for the league's jugular with a statement hire like a hypothetical Harbaugh hire would be.
Nevertheless, it gots me thinkin'. Would Harbaugh even want to coach the Bears? Or anywhere else in the league?
Well, per Schefter, he'd at least listen:
Which means the Bears (or Chargers, etc.) are really, really going to have to open the piggy banks. Reports are that U of M has a 10/125 offer on the table to Harbaugh which would make him the highest paid coach in college football:
And you gotta think after last night that there will be a booster out there that will open THEIR piggy bank and up the Harbaugh ante to what… 10/$150MM for a $15MM AAV? 10/$200MM for a $20MM AAV?
If that sounds crazy, it's not. Here are the highest paid NCAA coaches:
You gotta think that at this very juncture, Harbaugh is one of, if not THE BEST, football coach on earth. He's succeeded every single stop he's made and you bet your ass his newly hired agent will be pushing that narrative (fact?) to get both he and Harbaugh paid, so $20MM+ AAV might just be the going rate for him.
Want me to come to the NFL? Fine, make me the highest paid coach in the league.
And on that note, in the waning years of Soldier Field and Virginia McCaskey, the Bears have no option: make him an offer he can't refuse. Literally pay him 10 at $225 or whatever, SET THE FUCKING MARKET, and bring him home.
Yes, home. Harbaugh started his NFL career with the Chicago Bears. He's still tight with MJ. Still tight with Chicago. It's the only thing that makes sense right now. By all accounts, he's looking for the perfect situation.
Let me ask everyone this: who has the 1st pick, the 9th pick, the option of either Fields, Williams, or Maye at QB, a shit load of cap space, and a team that ended the 2nd half of the season clearly on the rise, and plays in a shit division?
The Chicago Bears.
Now I'm grasping at straws. Obviously the Bears fuck everything they do up and Harbaugh ain't an idiot. Even with everything I just said, Harbaugh might just say thanks but no thanks and go coach SD, head back to Michigan where I'm sure he now has a lifetime contract or whatever else.
But, on the flip side, win in Chicago and he cements his legacy as an all time great. For a competitive psycho like Harbaugh, that might be enticing. Still though…the Bears are the Bears.
I get that too. Trust me.
Money trumps all though. Make him an offer he can't refuse. Seriously. It's the only move to make for the Bears right now.
