Victor Wembanyama Put Alperen Sengun On One Of The Best Posters You'll Ever See
So far, I'd say things are going pretty well for Victor Wembanyama as he navigates his rookie season. It didn't take long for him to validate all the hype he had entering the Draft, and even though things aren't exactly translating to wins for the Spurs at the moment (16 straight losses entering tonight), that's not really what's important. That stuff comes later. What matters is Wemby getting on the court and doing as much cool shit as he possibly can.
With Wembanyama, sometimes that means handling and shooting like a guard, sometimes it means blocking a shot in a way that defies all logic. Then there are times he executes one of the best posters of the young season
First and foremost, credit Alperen Sengun here. He had to know what was coming but he had the guts to stand his ground and contest. I would imagine there are plays where he does this against other players and maybe he forces a miss. He could have made the business decision and not jumped, but he said fuck it and went for it. I can respect that.
At the same time, this is a 7'3 guy coming full speed right down the pipe. Watching that dunk, what stands out immediately is it's not like Wemby got all that much of a running start. He caught the ball and landed from his jumpstop right at the bottom of the cicle around the FT line
This is where liftoff came from. What the hell man. Then once he's elevated, this wasn't a dunk where he went through Sengun. Wembanyama went OVER Sengun. It was like there wasn't anything in front of him and all he had to do was drop his arm into the basket. Look at how high the ball is at its highest point!
Sengun fully extended and he doesn't even come close to impacting the shot. It's not his fault, this was about as good as defense as you could possibly play. There's just nothing you can do against Wembanyama in this situation. Then he follows through with force and gets the AND1 and all you can do is laugh. Of all the things that make you stop and shake your head with Wemby, this is the next item on the list. If that's not scary enough, then you remember he's going to get stronger too. Good luck.
In the event you were curious how the rest of the year is going for Wembanyama, he also became the youngest player in NBA history to have a 20/20 game just 2 days ago
So you could say things are going pretty well as long as you don't look at the Spurs record. I would not recommend doing that, instead, just remember that wins aren't the goal right now. Reps and experience are all that matters and if you win some games, so be it.
It may be early, but there's no denying this Wembanyama kid is going to be pretty good.
