Tommy Devito's Dad is The Greatest Plumber in The World, "I'm probably the fastest boiler installer you've ever seen"

NY Post - Tom DeVito can change a hot water heater in the time it takes for his NY Giants quarterback son to win a football game.

You have to be a real asshole to not respect any man or woman who takes pride in what they do. I once lived with a dude who made a career out of being a panhandler. I respected that man. He bounced around the country for years, living on the streets of cities all over America until he eventually ended up in Los Angeles. He somehow got himself arrested in a wrongful way during Occupy LA, and ended up winning $10k in some sort of class action lawsuit against the police (or something like that I forget the details, but he was wrongfully arrested and caught a bag).

He then used that $10k to get himself an apartment in Silver Lake. But he still had to keep making money. So every weekend, he would pack up his backpack and tent. On Friday he'd hop on a bus, take it as far as it would take him, and set up shop next to an exit ramp in an LA suburb. Somewhere like San Fernando. He'd sit there with a sign asking for money from Friday-Sunday, then come home Sunday night. He'd empty out his backpack on the coffee table and would have like $500 dollars is cash and coins. This dude knew what the fuck he was doing. The key is to set up on the off ramp of a busy exit, and walk up and down the line of cars while they're stopped at the light. That's why I scoff at any homeless person who I see just standing still on the corner. You gotta walk the cars my man. That's how you get yourself off the streets.

Ok that's probably not the best example. That dude was kinda just lying to people to get their money. Although he never really lied to anyone. He had a single cardboard sign with a smiley face on it. He said that was his best performing sign. Anyways, he was fucking good at what he did, and made himself a life out of it. Plus, I just wanted to tell that story again because I think about that guy all the time. He was a funny stand up comic too. Super nice guy. He sublet me a room for $600/month, which was a crazy good deal.

And he always tried to get me to panhandle, because he knew I was broke as shit. He told me I had the perfect face for it. I guess the less homeless you look, the more relatable you are to people, and the more money you'll make. He swore to me that if I camped out for a full weekend with a sign that said "Far from home anything helps" I'd pull in $1,000 easy. I could never bring myself to do it though. I just continued running my car into the ground driving Lyft for 10 hours a day to make $100.

Sorry for the completely irrelevant story. I didn't mean to group in Tommy Devito's dad's legitimate plumbing business with a panhandling semi-scammer. They're not the same. Tommy Devito's dad makes a more honest living. But I love how much pride he takes in his plumbing business.

The third-generation New Jersey plumber has been in the business for 35 years. His Montclair-based firm DeVito Plumbing & Heating has seven employees.

“I’m probably the fastest boiler installer you’ve ever seen. I do all-day boilers in about three hours,” DeVito told The Post matter-of-factly, ala Tom Brady discussing his completion accuracy.

The dutiful dad of Giants Cinderella hero Tommy DeVito continued, “I like to do the boilers because that’s [my] signature. I paint my boilers, I take pride in my boilers and I’m just a boiler specialist.”

Fastest boiler installer this world has ever seen. Takes most plumbers a whole day to install a boiler. But not Tom Devito. The man is lightning on the pipes. Take one look at him and that's abundantly clear.

“It’s all about speed. Because you’re billing on time. Anybody can do the job. But how long does it take you to do it? And do it neatly and professionally. If it takes you eight hours to do something that I can do in two hours — that’s not good.”

I'm willing to bet a lot of plumbers out there have the opposite strategy. Taking their sweet ass time because they're billing by the hour. But Tom cares far more about quality service than he does making a quick buck.

Good for Tom. You love to see good things happen to good hard working families. Who knows how long Tommy DeVito will last in the NFL, but this season has already been fucking incredible for his family I'm sure. And for the rest of time, whenever Tom is out there fixing pipes, he gets to tell people that his son was the starting quarterback for the New York Giants. Then he'll knock out a full days worth of plumbing in 2 hours.
