An NBCUniversal Employee Accidentally Leaked When "Shrek 5" Is Going To Be Released Via Her LinkedIn

It really is incredible how much "Shrek" has endured in the cultural lexicon over the last few decades. I remember seeing it in theaters in my family when I was six. It's awesome. It's hilarious. I watched it during Covid. It still really holds up. It's a great kids' movie that you can watch With the family. The sequels, outside of "Shrek 2," aren't anything amazing, but they have their merits. It's been rumored for a long time that "Shrek 5" would be happening at some point, but I don't believe we ever got an official announcement until now.  

While updating their LinkedIn profile, an NBC, Universal employee listed "Shrek 5" as one of the movies they will be working on, with a release date in 2025. 

Well, this person was working on "Shrek 5." We'll see how much longer that lasts. OK, I'm kidding. I doubt that Universal and DreamWorks are as tightlipped about their project as Disney is. It's a unique way to accidentally break the news but fuck it, "Shrek 5" is a thing. 

I’m guessing Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz have probably been pushing for this for a long time. I mean, when was the last time you saw them in anything? I’m sure they made their money, but they were A-listers when these movies first came out. I don’t know if we can say that today. But "Shrek" is still a huge brand, and Shrek's character is a star. I’ll see the next chapter. 

It sounds weird to say this about a kid's movie, but much of the humor in the first "Shrek" movie probably wouldn’t fly today. It’ll be interesting to see how they adjust to the modern climate. It would be funny if they didn’t adjust at all, but financially, it probably wouldn’t do them any favors. It’s one of the things I always liked about Shrek. It’s that kids' movie you watched that you almost felt you shouldn’t be watching when you were young. I hope they can at least maintain some of that edge. It’s what made the first two movies classics.
