The Dodgers Letting Future HOFer Corey Seager Leave Is Wild

Corey Seager won his SECOND World Series MVP last night. This is rare air. The only players who ever won two World Series MVP's are Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax and Reggie Jackson. He's not even 30 years old yet and his resume is insane. Rookie Of The Year, 4 time All-Star and at least a 2 time Silver Slugger. He's only getting better too. You could make a case that no one benefitted more from the shift being banned than Seager. 

2022: .245/.317/.455

2023: .327/.390/.623

He even had 18 more doubles and the same amount of home runs in 2023 that he had in 2022…in 130 less at bats. He has a career slugging percentage of .512 as a shortstop. You need to play 10 seasons of MLB to qualify for the Hall of Fame but the second he plays one game next year, he'd have my imaginary vote.

He is signed for eight more seasons. He already has 1019 hits and 170 home runs so he's getting at least 2000 hits and 300 career home runs easily. If he suffered some horrible injury, then I still think he should be a Hall of Famer like other greats we saw get hurt early like Koufax. You win two World Series MVP's, you are all but an automatic HOFer in my eyes.

So why did the Dodgers let this guy go? He was a 27 year old free agent playing for the big market Dodgers who up until that point seemed to have almost unlimited money. You'd think of all the guys on that roster (except for Mookie Betts), Seager would be your number one priority. They asked Seager that question last night. 

Now, I am sure he wanted to focus on the here and now less than an hour after winning a World Series. But, it is telling that he really had no interest in answering that. That tells me that it's not like this was a guy who wanted to get the hell out of L.A. at all costs. It's not even like the Dodgers had major long term commitments (at least for their payroll). They only have $125 million committed to players for next season. 

In fairness, they had Trea Turner in 2022 and had hoped Gavin Lux would improve but what are we even talking about here? It's Corey Fucking Seager! He's so unassuming, it's easy to look past how great he is.

The Dodgers won 100 games last year and you know they'll reload this off-season. They'll make plays for all the major free agents like Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Nola, Blake Snell and more. But that's what makes them letting Seager go so shocking. It should never have come to this. Mookie and Seager should have gone gray together in Dodger blue.

But for this off-season, Corey Seager is the king of baseball. In case you didn't think he wasn't already winning, here's him after they won.
